India will soon attain an 8-9 per cent annual growth rate and become a USD 3-trillion economy, President Pranab Mukherjee said today even as he stressed that there should be clarity as to the true meaning of development. Inaugurating the 40th national conference of the Indian Sociological Society at the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith University here, Mukherjee said it should be clear as to what is the meaning of development.

India will tread with extreme caution at the sixth round of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations, beginning Monday in New Delhi. The government is under intense pressure from countries such as Australia and New Zealand to give heavy duty reductions to all member nations of the grouping, including China with which India ran up a $36 billion trade deficit last year.

An India-China-Bangladesh-Myanmar economic corridor has been planned to get significant gains through sub-regional economic cooperation, Bangladesh Prime Minister's energy affairs advisor Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said in Agartala on Sunday. "To attain significant gains through sub-regional economic cooperation, an India-China-Bangladesh-Myanmar economic corridor has been planned. This was also discussed in the Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit in Kathmandu last week," Chowdhury told reporters here.

India is likely to challenge a WTO panel's ruling which had described the country's ban on American poultry product imports as inconsistent with global norms. The Department of Commerce is working on the "feasibility of filing an appeal against the WTO's panel report" in consultation with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, sources said. In its ruling on October 14, the WTO panel had said that India's measures are "arbitrarily and unjustifiably discriminate between Members where identical or similar conditions prevail and are applied in a manner which constitutes a disguised restriction on international trade".
