The United States said on Tuesday it was prepared to examine how agricultural policy reform could boost global food security as part of a package of commitments at the World Trade Organisation's upcoming meeting in December. "The United States agrees with India and other proponents that enhancing food security in developing countries is indeed an important issue for this body to address," US Ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke said in Geneva, according to a text of his remarks released in Washington.

India and European Union could sign the bilateral trade deal that has been in the works for over five years, keeping aside the contentious issues such as lower duty for European cars in India and liberal visas regime for Indian professionals in the 27-country union. The chief negotiators of the two sides could consider this option in their meeting on May 15, an senior commerce department official familiar with the developments told ET.

Ukraine’s move to ban wheat exports from November 15 could trigger demand for the Indian grain. Wheat exporters see a potential rise in Indian shipments, though prospects for upside in pricing are limited as the market has already factored in Ukraine’s move. “The Ukraine export ban will definitely benefit us. However, it all depends on how the Australian crop, scheduled for harvest next month, shapes up,” said Anil Monga, Chairman, Emmsons International Ltd, a Delhi-based exporter.

India staked its claim as a dairy exporter with the announcement by its top dairy group that it is to sell through GlobalDairyTrade, the auction site, where prices stand at record highs. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, the company behind India's Amul dairy label, said to be the country's top fast moving consumer goods brand, is from the June 4 GlobalDairyTrade event sell through the auction.
