Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said transformation of the agricultural sector should be the top priority of the country's public policies including those on science and technology. Singh also said that complex issues related to genetically modified food, nuclear energy or the exploration of outer space cannot be settled by faith, emotion and fear, but by a structured debate.

Mauritius President Rajkeswur Purryag Thursday began a week-long visit to India that will see the two countries scaling up their bilateral ties across the spectrum including trade, investment and cultural ties. Purryag, of Indian origin, was warmly received by Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur. He is accompanied by his spouse Aneetah Purryag and senior ministers dealing with arts and culture, social integration and economic empowerment.

India, the largest banana producing country in the world, is vying for a bigger share of the global market.An ambitious plan has been drawn up by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) to export Indian-grown bananas globally to China, East Asia, the Middle East and Europe.It is estimated that the annual trade could be worth $1.2bn (£750m). The plan is to create a global brand for Tamil Nadu Bananas, along the lines of Florida Oranges and California Apples.
