Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Thursday called for increased private partnership for creating post-harvest management and processing facilities for horticulture produce. The Minister also asked Kerala to create processing facilities for fruits like pineapple, enhance productivity of crops including pepper, cashewnut and coconut, to make them more competitive in export market.

Horticulture production has surpassed production of food grains in the country for the first time, and the Indian government is likely to create further growth in the sector to ensure that the country can access a balanced diet, said agriculturists at the inauguration of the Indian Horticulture Congress on Thursday. Field crops like rice, wheat and maize, contribute to only 30% of the agriculture production in the country, said Ashish Bahuguna, secretary, department of agriculture and co-operation.

A global trade deal between India, the United States and the European Union is close to being signed, with India agreeing to sign the stalled international treaty on easier customs rules, the Times of India reported. India will sign the treaty only after an agreement on the contentious food security issue is reached at the World Trade Organization, and in return the United States and European Union will accept India's demand for providing flexibility to developing countries in fixing minimum support price for farm products, the newspaper reported, citing a source.

India and Russia, hoping to boost their trade and economic ties that remain below potential, despite decades-old strong political ties, today gave shape to joint "economic vision" package including possibility of joining a Customs Union in Eurasian region and increasing trade via Iran that will be unveiled when President Vladimir Putin visits India in December second week.
