Prime Minister Narendra Modi looks to Bihar for future of farming

From his sleepy village in Bihar, Ram Narain arrives at Gulab Bagh market to sell a truckload of corn that will fetch him enough money to buy a motorbike for his son, school uniforms for his daughter and a gift for his wife. Narain and legions of farmers have more than doubled corn output in just five years by adopting hybrid seeds and good farm practices, a rare success story Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to replicate in other states. He came to power six months ago by promising faster farm and economic growth.

'Normal trade with Pak depends on India getting MFN status'

Progress in trade normalization with Pakistan would depend on the decision taken by Pakistan with regard to granting Most Favoured Nation (MNF) Status to India, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman said in the Lok Sabha on Friday. "Pakistan, however, did not adhere to the timelines", Minister said. India granted MFN status to Pakistan in 1996. "Progress in trade normalisation would depend on the decision taken by Pakistan with regard to granting MFN status to India," the Minister said during Question Hour.

India looks to Putin’s visit to lift sagging ties

India and Russia will look to trade to boost the sagging ties between the two countries when Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives here for a brief visit this week. Mr. Putin will land on December 10 and fly out within 24 hours the next day. Mr. Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are likely to unveil two “vision documents” on strategic, nuclear and economic issues, and could possibly make a joint appearance at the World Diamond Congress being held here on December 11 and 12.
