Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes five cabinet ministers, arrived here Wednesday on a three-day official visit during which bilateral trade and investment and cooperation in education, science and technology, and renewable energy would fugure high on the agenda at the inter-governmental talks that kick off Thursday. "I intend to seek greater trade and investment ties with Germany as we continue to take steps to boost domestic investments, attract foreign investors and spur the economy back to its long term growth potential of 8 percent," said the prime minister.

India has demanded a balanced outcome from the World Trade Organization (WTO) ministerial meeting in Bali, Indonesia, scheduled for December, with the interest of so-called least developed countries (LDCs) and developing nations at its core. While developed countries are pushing for an agreement on trade facilitation to boost their exports, India and other developing countries want an agreement on food security and duty-free, quota-free market access for LDCs.

Implementation of the proposed free-trade agreement between India and Thailand would help increase the bilateral trade to USD 16 billion in the next three years, a Thailand Diplomat said today. With Indian economy growing at a faster pace, the bilateral trade has grown from USD 4.7 billion in 2007 to USD 8.34 billion in 2012, Chanchai Charanvatnakit, Consul General, Royal Thai Consulate-General, Chennai, said.

Food Minister KV Thomas on Wednesday inspected the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari/Wagah border Amritsar and also visited the container terminal. He said that he was here to inspect the operation of ICP, especially trade with Pakistan. In a press statement, he said he was here to interact with senior officials of Food Corporation of India and state government, as it is at the onset of Rabi marketing season.
