India's engagement with the Arabian Peninsula dates back to several millennia when traders and sailors from South Asia used to sail across the Arabian Sea, in boats made of Malabar wood. The relationship got reinforced and strengthened over a period of time with robust exchanges and there emerged a strong symbiotic relationship, which has stood the test of time and is growing stronger.

While agencies like APEDA are crowing about their efforts to increase export of Indian wines, a small company started in 2009 in UK by two Oxford MBAs from India has been importing and selling to over 300 Indian restaurants under their own brand Soul Tree. It has now found its way to the Finals of the prestigious UK National Business Awards in the Start-up Business of the Year category.

In order to address the constraints limiting the productivity of rice-based cropping systems in eastern India, the Government launched a programme namely Bringing Green Revolution in Eastern India (BGREI) during the year 2010-2011. It is a sub-scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) and is being implemented in seven states, viz Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma today said that a comprehensive review of all sectors has been undertaken to address concerns of exporters. The government is also working to bring down the transaction cost to make Indian exports more competitive in the global market and with the slew of measures already announced, the government expects a turnaround by October. “We are seriously concerned because of the slowdown.
