India’s global rice exports could top 10 million tonnes in the fiscal year ending next March, industry officials said Thursday. Thailand, the world’s No. 1 rice exporter, is in danger of losing its top position for the first time since 1983 because of a government intervention scheme that has pushed Thai export prices up to uncompetitive levels. Forecasts from the the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that India, which resumed exports in September 2011, could take over the No.1 spot from Thailand this year.

Amid widening trade deficit with China, the government is channelising funds for promoting Indian goods in the neighbouring country with a view to bridging the trade imbalance, a senior official said. "We are taking steps to reduce Chinese imports. The Commerce and Industry Ministry is pushing exporters to organise more and more fairs and shows to showcase their products. We are channelising funds to support such events," the official said.

In a business meeting with Dr. Mikhail Myasnikovich, Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus, Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Dr. D Purandeswari said that both India and Belarus need to take sincere and concerted efforts as the bilateral trade and investment between the two countries remains below potential. “Specific measures should be taken to enhance trade between the two countries…a number of new bilateral documents are in the process of elaboration,” said Dr. D Purandeswari.

The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Zaporizhya Chamber of Commerce concluded a joint cooperation agreement to establish trade and economic times. This emerged at the end of an interactive meeting the trade body had with Deputy Head of Zaporizhya Regional State Administration Goncharuk Petro and Deputy Ambassador of Ukraine Embassy Oleksii Stepanov here today.
