India’s burgeoning processed foods firms can breathe easy. Occasional clampdowns on agri-commodity exports —which cover processed foods as well — will no longer be applicable to them. A formal announcement is expected shortly. ndia has banned exports of onions, wheat, non-basmati rice and milk at various times in the last few years to boost domestic stocks.

Last month, Chennai saw its very successful organic farmers market. The event was jam packed with customers jostling to buy any and all products, as long as there was a tag of organic on it. Mumbai has a regular organic farmers market. Organic is the new buzzword in our country. Every city and large towns has either got an organic food store or a weekly/monthly organic food market.

A United Nations aid agency recently purchased 61,000 tonnes of wheat of Indian origin to be shipped to the East African state of Djibouti, European traders said on Tuesday. Seller was Cargill and shipment should be made by August 15. The purchase was made two weeks ago. The U.N. has a range of food aid programmes underway in East Africa.

Here’s good news for lovers of Himachal apples. The early varieties of the fruit have started reaching the markets of the State capital after the harvesting season of the fruit began after a delay of a fortnight. With around 1,500 to 2,000 Himachal apple crates reaching the Dhalli wholesale market of Shimla each day from low lying areas of apple belt of the State, growers are expecting good prices.
