India is the 19th largest exporter with a share of 1.7 per cent in the worldwide merchandise trade, Parliament was informed today. On the other hand, the country is the 12th largest importer with a share of 2.5 per cent in 2011. "As per WTO's International Statistics, 2012, in merchandise trade, India is 19th largest exporter in the world with a share of 1.7 per cent and 12th largest importer with a share of 2.5 per cent in 2011," Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

Dubai Exports, the export promotion agency of the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai, will be showcasing the UAE food and beverages industry at Gulfood 2013 show, being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from February 25-28. Dubai has over 2, 000 companies involved in the trade and manufacture of food and beverage products. The food manufacturing sector especially has grown considerably in recent years and now accounts for 14 per cent of the manufacturing sector in Dubai according to a special report on the food and beverage sector produced by Dubai Exports.

David Cameron and the largest-ever trade delegation to India were accompanied on last week's visit by a familiar hanger-on: the whiff of cynicism. The uninvited guest wanted to know why the Prime Minister was swanning off to the other side of the world rather than dealing with his myriad domestic problems – and whether these trips made the slightest bit of difference anyway? After all, the PM's previous visit in 2010 didn't stop India choosing to buy French fighter planes last year, instead of part-British Typhoons.

The government today said there is no proposal to ban export of onion and its prices in the domestic market are showing a declining trend. "There is no proposal to ban export of onion," Minister of State for Agriculture Tariq Anwar said in a written reply to the Rajaya Sabha. The untimely rains in different onion growing areas, which has affected the crop and its supply chain, has contributed to sharp increase in its prices, he said.
