West Bengal government sets up 48 'krishak bazaars' in state
Nov 18, 2014

The West Bengal government has set up 48 `krishak bazaars' ( agricultural markets) across the state to help farmers sell their produce and get remunerative prices, agricultural marketing minister Arup Roy told the house.

Replying during question hour, Roy said that such markets would also help the small and marginal farmers.

Roy said that the government has formed a new concept `my crop, my vehicle' which would enable the farmers to carry their produce to the markets to sell them and in the process, the role of the middlemen would be elimininated.

The farmers would also be able to keep the unsold produce in the cold storages which would come up near the markets.

All the 48 markets would be operational by this year, Roy said.

The markets would also prevent the farmers from distress sale, he said.
