Sugar output to rise 12% in 2020-21 season: Trade body.
Jun 26, 2020

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has estimated India's 2020-21 sugarcane area will rise 8%, while sugar production would increase by over 12% to 305 lakh tonnes expected in current season.

'Based on the satellite images procured in the latter part of June 2020, the total acreage under sugarcane in the country is estimated to be around 52.28 lakh hectares in 2020-21 sugar season (SS), which is about 8% higher than 2019-20 sugar season’s cane area of around 48.41 lakh hectares, said a release from ISMA.

Maharashtra and Karnataka would be the main contributors to the rise as these states suffered adverse weather in the previous season. In Uttar Pradesh, the area is likely to fall 1% while sugar output is estimated to be 123.06 lakh tonnes, slightly lower than 126.45 lakh tonnes in the 2019-20 season.
