Mar 09, 2017

With over 900 participants, the 2017 edition of Aahar, South Asia’s largest food and hospitality fair, kicked off at New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan. Covering an area of over 60,000sq m, it will be spread over 14 halls. Organised by India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), this is the 32nd essay of the event. It was inaugurated by Harsimrat Kaur Badal, minister of food processing industries. The inauguration witnessed the presence of a number of foreign dignitaries, including the ambassadors of Canada, Peru, and Poland.

Badal said, “The ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI) welcomes everybody who desires to invest in the food processing sector. For this purpose, the government has opened the doors by allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in food retail.”

She urged the participating companies to invest under the relaxed FDI norms. She added that the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) had set aside a fund of Rs 2,000 crore to set up units in mega parks, which the entrepreneur can avail of.

Badal also invited foreign companies to participate in the World Food India summit, slated to take place between November 3 and 5, 2017.

According to ITPO, about 72 foreign companies are participating in the fair. Several countries, including the United States, China, Canada, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Russia and Poland, are participating in the event.

The organisers have also made special provisions in Aahar to promote new and young entrepreneurs. And with improved event logistics, the fair is being promoted through social media, with engagement on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, besides its website.

ITPO stated that it expected about 60,000 trade visitors to visit the fair this time.
