Government to set up centre to boost organic farming: Agriculture minister Vijai Sardesai
Jan 11, 2019

The government will soon enter a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an Israeli company to create a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in organic famring, minister for agriculture Vijai Sardesai said, after inaugurating AgriGoa an agriculture exhibition in Margao on Thursday.
The facility which will be set up at the government’s Kodar agriculture farm will provide support, training and best practices in organic farming.
Around 500 organic farming clusters will be set up in the state under the Centre’s Pramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana, he said. Under the central scheme, 10,000 farming clusters will be set up across the country.
The CoE will be for two distinct facilities – regional council and service providers. While four agencies will be selected in the service providers category, one or two will be appointed as regional councils. The service providers will be tasked with organizing farmers, providing requisite support, and demonstrating methods of organic cultivation in the respective clusters, while regional councils will deal with issues concerning organic certification.
Stressing on the need for self-sufficiency in agriculture in terms of both output and quality, Sardesai spoke about the government’s intent to support community farming in the state.
