APEDA, the government’s export promotion body for farm products, is formulating a policy to boost exports of processed foods and organic products. We are slowly strategising to move away from export of raw agricultural items to shipment of processed foods, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) chairman Asit Tripathy told PTI.

An empowered committee has cleared export of 70,000 tonnes of wheat from the government stock, for which bids were invited by state-run trading firms STC and PEC. Recently, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had approved export of 2 million tonnes of wheat from the Food Corporation of India ( FCI) to clear surplus stocks.

India plans to seek Pakistan's approval for export of all goods from the country through the land route to make the recent removal of ban on most Indian goods more effective. An official, who did not wish to be named, told ET that India may allow Islamabad use of safeguard measures such as short-term additional import duties in case imports of particular products rise beyond reasonable limits.

A Thai trade researcher has concurred with a recent prediction by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that India and Vietnam will export more rice than Thailand this year. Thanawan Phonwichai, the Director of the Business and Economics Forecasting Center at the Thai Chamber of Commerce University said that Thailand is expected to lose its crown as the world’s top rice exporter due to an increasingly competitive regional market.
