Food processing industries has been growing at a faster pace than the agriculture and manufacturing sectors in the country, Agriculture and Food Processing Minister Sharad Pawar said Wednesday. Pawar, while inaugurating the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) here called food processing as the "sunrise sector" and said that it has the potential to enhance the income of the farmer and country's foreign exchange.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is likely to extend incentives to certain export sectors, such as engineering products, leather, gems and jewellery, which have seen shipments shrink over the past six months. A ministry official said, “We’ve started a review of key export sectors that will be completed November-end. Based on that, we may announce some incentives to boost exports of products for which shipments have been declining.”

India's exports to the Asean countries would get a filip with zero duty regime expected to come into force by January 1, 2016, an expert said. The total exports to Asean counties stood at Rs 1,24,130 crore in 2010-11, compared to 85,902 crore a year ago. "Under the Asean trade agreement, zero duty regime is expected from January 1, 2016, which will provide a filip to exports," said Sudhakar Kasture, Director, Exim Institute, a division of Helpline Impex Pvt Ltd.

Improved relations between India and Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and a major oil exporter, have led to the trade volume between the two countries rising to USD 17.3 billion over the past year, Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria Mahesh Sachdev has said. Speaking at the Indian Day celebrations at the Lagos International Trade Fair, which opened Nov 2, he said: "With bilateral trade of over USD 17.3 billion, India is currently Nigeria's second largest trading partner.
