India has been able to demonstrate inherent strength and resilience amid global economic crises, President Pranab Mukherjee said in New Delhi Monday. Interacting with a group of probationers of the 64th batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) from the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics, Mukherjee said that in his various stints in the finance ministry, he had a chance to look closely at the growth in revenue services.

India is considering widening its trade agreement with MERCOSUR bloc comprising Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay with an aim to enhance economic engagement with these countries, a top official today said. "India has signed a preferential trade agreement with MERCOSUR and we are currently looking at expanding this," Commerce Secretary S R Rao said here at a CII function.

Massive plans are on to export 10,000 tonnes of banana to the Gulf countries from the district, according to Agricultural Production Commissioner Sandeep Saxena. Inspecting hybrid banana farms in Chinnamanur near here on Thursday, he said that the quality of banana being grown in the district was very good and the fruits were uniform in colour. Moreover, their shelf life was also long and the fruits met all requirements for export.

Certain areas/sectors have been identified in some African countries where India’s exports are presently quite low and the share of India’s exports in those countries’ global imports in these sectors is also low and thus India has the potential to export these identified commodities to these countries. In order to enhance India’s exports in these sectors, trade promotion events such as the multi-sectoral ‘India Show’ events, comprising of a large exhibition showcasing the Indian products, technology and services and Business Seminar, participation in International Trade Fairs, Buyer Seller Meets and Reverse Buyer Sellers’ Meets etc.
