Exports grew for the fourth consecutive month, recording a growth of 1.6 per cent in April, but surge in gold imports pushed up the trade deficit to $17.7 billion. Exports in April stood at $24.16 billion as against $23.7 billion in April, 2012. Gold and silver imports, during the month under review, had more than doubled to $7.5 billion from $3.1 billion in April, 2012. “Imports have seen an undue growth of 10.9 per cent (in April to $41.95 billion), largely contributed to by a significant increase in gold imports,” Commerce Secretary S. R. Rao told reporters here.

Prime Minister of the UAE has hailed the close relationship between India and the gulf country saying that the social and trade ties between the two nations have become stronger now. "Since the early 1950s, the UAE, and Dubai in particular, have been working on the promotion of these good relations with India," said Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the ruler of Dubai and Vice-President of the UAE.

Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan grew 21% to $2.4 billion last year, as Islamabad reaped the benefits of trade normalisation more than the gains made by New Delhi, says the Indian High Commission. According to latest figures of the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, Ministry of Commerce and Industry India, which were released here on Monday, the volume of bilateral trade recorded a net increase of $410 million from April last year to March this year.

U.S. ambassador Nancy J. Powell on Monday expressed optimism over the growing commercial ties with India and underscored the work done by the two countries in reducing input costs of farmers and improving farm productivity. “Trade brings people together, creates jobs and provides countless new opportunities for people in both our countries. There is plenty of room for growth, and we need to see where we can best help each other because a healthy balance of trade is essential,” Ms. Powell said in an address during the launch of the tenth American Business Centre (ABC) here.
