Exports grew for the fourth consecutive month, recording a growth of 1.6 per cent in April, but surge in gold imports pushed up the trade deficit to $17.7 billion. Exports in April stood at $24.16 billion as against $23.7 billion in April, 2012. Gold and silver imports, during the month under review, had more than doubled to $7.5 billion from $3.1 billion in April, 2012. “Imports have seen an undue growth of 10.9 per cent (in April to $41.95 billion), largely contributed to by a significant increase in gold imports,” Commerce Secretary S. U.S. ambassador Nancy J. Powell on Monday expressed optimism over the growing commercial ties with India and underscored the work done by the two countries in reducing input costs of farmers and improving farm productivity. “Trade brings people together, creates jobs and provides countless new opportunities for people in both our countries.
