After the government had lifted the ban on export of milk powder in June last year, India exported about 60,000 tonnes of SMP. Industry sources said if there was no cap, the country could export about 100,000 tonnes a year. In the last five years, SMP export had been banned twice. India processes about 370,000 tonnes of SMP a year. This year, owing to depressed domestic demand and good milk production, there is surplus stock.

India is considering exceeding its recently approved wheat export quota on a government-to-government basis to trim its large stockpiles, the food minister said Thursday. The government is expected to procure a record amount of wheat this season and is trying to trim its bulging grain stocks that stand at about 66 million tons, more than three times the government-stipulated minimum volume.

Canada is keen on investing in joint projects with India especially in tourism, agriculture, IT and education sectors. At a meeting with a multi-sectoral gathering organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here today, a delegation of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), which included some senators and MPs of Canadian Parliament, said the size of trade between the two countries had grown to 5.2 billion dollars last year from 1.75 billion dollars in 2010.

The government on Thursday expressed hope that Pakistan will move ahead with the proposal of granting MNF status to India after the elections in the neighbouring country. "Hopefully by June-July, a new government will assume office in Pakistan and I am sure that the first priority of the new government would be perhaps giving the (MFN) status," Commerce Secretary S R Rao said here at a ICRIER function.
