Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Saturday asked 11 states and Union Territories that have implemented Food Security Act to meet all standards by December-end, failing which the Centre would "rethink" over its continuation there. The Centre has "written a letter to the chief ministers of all 11 states and UTs, where Food Security Act has been made functional, to meet all standards of the (Food Security) Legislation by December-end," Paswan told reporters here.

Food processing industry now formed an important segment of the Indian Eeconomy in terms of contribution to GDP, employment and investment, and proved to be a major driver in country's growth in near future, a senior government official said today. "FPI contributes as much as 9.0 to 10.0 per cent of GDP in agriculture and Manufacturing sector," said J P Meena, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (GOI), delivering a key note address at National Conference on 'Mega Food Parks' organised by Assocham.

The government has slammed World Trade Organization members, who suggested signing an agreement on easier custom rules by a select group of countries and keep the dissenters such as India out of the Bali package. Several countries have in the past proposed that countries such as India be kept out and a plurilateral framework be worked out. On Friday, WTO director general Roberto Azevedo too listed it out as one of the options to break the deadlock at the multilateral agency, though he also said that such an arrangement is not in the best interests of a global trade framework.
