Two US lawmakers have urged President Donald Trump to push for favourable provisions for pulse crop in any future trade deal with India, saying American producers face a 'significant competitive disadvantage' due to what they described as 'unfair' tariffs imposed by New Delhi. In a letter dated Jan 16 addressed to Trump, Republican Senators Steve Daines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said their states are the top two producers of pulse crops, including peas, while India is the world's largest consumer, accounting for about 27 per cent of global consumption.

India works to protect Chabahar Port after waiver ends.
India is working around US sanctions against the Chabahar Port to safeguard its interests after the expiry of the sanctions waiver in April through a unique arrangement with Iran. India Ports Global Limited (IPGL), which is managing the port since 2024 under a 10-year pact with Iran, could enter into an arrangement with a local entity to manage the Chabahar Port with a guarantee that this right will be transferred back to India when sanctions are lifted, ET has reliably learnt.

The Indian government today notified a major change in customs rules to help smaller businesses and exporters find it easier to claim duty benefits. The government has overhauled customs rules to put exports sent by post at par with regular cargo exports, making it easier for exporters and smaller businesses to claim incentives such as duty drawback, Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) and Remission of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) schemes.

India allows 5 lakh tonnes of wheat product exports, partially lifting three-year ban.
Ahead of the next wheat harvesting season, which starts from April, India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has allowed 5 lakh tonnes (lt) of wheat products for export, partially lifting a ban imposed in 2022. The move may help the Indian diaspora buy atta, maida, and sooji from domestic brands they can easily identify, experts said.
