Thai rice exports plunge, India to sell more grain

Feb 07, 2012

Thai rice exports slumped by more than half in January from a year earlier, which traders blamed on a government intervention scheme, while India continued to sell more grain after its government eased export curbs. Thailand, the world's biggest rice exporter, sold just 350,000 tonnes of rice in January, down 52 percent from a year earlier, when it exported 730,000 tonnes, Commerce Ministry data show. "The sharp fall in January is clear evidence that our prices are uncompetitive, and exports will continue to fall," one trader said. Thailand's benchmark 100 percent B grade white rice was steady at $550 per tonne on Wednesday, propped up by the government's buying as demand remained thin.

Thai Rice Exporters Association Forecasts 38% Plunge in Private Thai Rice Exports – What’s in Store for Indian Rice Exports?

Jan 17, 2012

The head of the Thai Rice Exporters Association says she expects private Thai rice exports to fall 38% from 2011 to about 6.5 to 8 million tons. That excludes government-to-government sales. “We could lose the top exporter position to Vietnam,” she said. The USDA on January 12 forecast Thai rice exports may decline 33% to 7 million tons this year, the lowest since 2000. The USDA expects Vietnam to export around 6.7 million tons of rice, below Vietnamese officials’ estimates closer to 7 million tons. Thai exporters blame the Thai rice mortgage scheme in which the government buys paddy rice at about twice the previous market price along with increased competition from Indian parboiled and white rice exports to markets including Africa.

Asia rice prices dip as India, Vietnam race for markets

Dec 16, 2011

Intensifying competition between Vietnam and India for a bigger share of the rice market made available by the drop in costlier Thai exports have pushed prices down around Asia. This is good news for billions of consumers of the staple across Asia, the Middle East and Africa, as global food prices eased last month but held at high levels with further scope to rise on future supply concerns, the United Nations' food agency said.

Thai Floods Damage Rice Fields, Small Impact on Global Market Predicted

Nov 15, 2011

Thailand is the world’s number one rice exporter and this year lost thousands of hectares of rice fields to historically high floodwaters that swept across the country. The damage has raised concerns about the affect on global rice prices and supply. But rice market analysts say a record harvest, global surplus, and a second crop should prevent any dramatic disruptions. Thailand exports up to ten million tons of rice per year, one-third of the total global market.

Thai Rice Exports Seen Plunging 50% on Government Buying Program, Flooding

Nov 04, 2011

Rice shipments from Thailand, the largest exporter, will drop by half from November to January as a state-buying policy raises costs and flooding disrupts transport, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Association. Exports may slump to 500,000 metric tons per month from an average of 1 million tons in the first nine months as the state purchases lift local prices and make Thai rice less competitive, Honorary President Chookiat Ophaswongse said yesterday. Thailand implemented the rice-buying policy at guaranteed prices last month to lift rural incomes even as the worst floods since 1942 wreak damage on farms. Lower Thai exports may benefit Vietnam and India, the second- and third-largest shippers.

Southeast Asia’s battle with some of the worst floods in decades is far from over, with waters seeping deeper into the Thai capital of Bangkok. Demand for Indian rice up on higher Thailand price

Oct 24, 2011

As rice prices rise and supply tightens in Thailand, the world's largest exporter, buyers are increasingly turning to India to meet their needs though infrastructure bottlenecks may slowdown shipments, trading executives said. Thailand controls close to a third of global rice exports but India has started eating into that share after resuming shipments last month after the government relaxed a more than three-year-old ban on exports of ordinary rice. Even traditional buyers of Southeast Asian grades of rice are now eyeing the Indian grain. In a recent tender, Iraq purchased 30,000 metric tons Indian 5% broken white rice at $573/ton, basis cost, insurance and freight, one of the first such sale of ordinary rice to the Middle East country in several years.

Thai rice plan could hit global market

Oct 07, 2011

Thailand's new rice policy that aims to pay farmers hefty premium could cost it customers, while making Asia's staple food costlier, say experts. Speculation ahead of the government intervention scheme has already pushed the benchmark rice export price up 30 percent since the end of May to $650 a tonne. It could go far higher, adding to the worries of Asian policymakers already grappling with slower economic growth and rapid inflation. From Friday, Thailand's new government will fulfill a promise that helped Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra win the rural vote and pay millions of its farmers 15,000 baht ($480) a tonne for paddy rice, double the price before the July election.

Rice Prices To Be Steady On Tight Supply

Aug 18, 2011

Asia's rice prices will likely hold steady for the next few weeks due to tight supply and concerns over a Thailand government scheme that may boost prices. Thai and Vietnam 5% broken rice prices are hovering around $550 a metric ton, free on board. Many growers and millers are already holding back grain in anticipation of the government scheme, said Chookiat Ophaswongse, managing director of major Thai exporter Huay Chuan Rice Co. He said the government plans to implement the scheme in November, at the time of the next harvest. Under the program, the government will purchase rice from growers at THB15,000/ton, compared with THB10,000/ton now.

Aug 17, 2011

Yingluck Shinawatra became Thailand’s first female prime minister by pledging to lift rural incomes through higher rice prices. The rest of Asia may now have to pay for her campaign promise. Yingluck has said the government will buy unmilled grain from farmers at 15,000 baht ($502) a ton at harvest in November, above current market rates of 9,900 baht. With Thailand the world’s biggest exporter, that may raise rice prices across a region that accounts for 87 percent of global consumption. The leader presented her economic policies to Cabinet yesterday and is scheduled to announce them publicly by Aug. 24.

World rice crop, trade expected to hit new records

Aug 04, 2011

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) reduced its April forecast of global paddy production in 2011 by 1.5 million tonnes to 718.3 million tonnes (478.9 million tonnes, milled). Still, world production will be 2.5 per cent over last year’s outcome, striking a new high. Thailand is expected to especially benefit from increased exports, with world market price recovery mainly reacting to the growing likelihood of a reintroduced rice pledging programme at higher prices in Thailand, which could cut the country’s availabilities for export.

Thai supplies may be “abundant” this year, with rising output helping to boost reserves, Calpe wrote, without giving precise forecasts.

Thailand's poultry exports remain promising

Nov 30, 2010

Thailand's chicken exports should remain promising next year, despite the faltering global economic outlook. Exports are forecast to be worth between $1.65 billion and $1.73 billion in 2011 compared with $1.57 billion this year, a 10% rise from a year earlier, said Anan Sirimongkolkasem, president of the Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association. Thailand is expected to ship 410,000 to 420,000 tonnes of poultry this year, 360,000 tonnes of which would be cooked products and the remainder frozen raw chicken. Anan said raw chicken exports were better than expected this year, with further growth seen next year because of a larger global population demanding more food. In 2003, before the bird flu outbreak, Thailand exported 98,231 tonnes of raw chicken meat to the EU. Thailand currently ships only cooked chicken products to the EU, which has an import quota. The quota is 252,643 tonnes: 160,033 tonnes of processed chicken and 92,610 tonnes of salted poultry. EU inspectors are scheduled to visit Thailand in March to review preventive animal health measures and animal welfare standards as well as re-evaluate possible reinstatement of raw chicken meat imports.
