Alcobevs to be scrutinised only for safety; no upper limit: FSSAI.
Nov 11, 2022

The FSSAI has stated that alcoholic beverages imported into India in bulk shall be ‘scrutinised’ against sub regulation 1.3.9 of the FSS (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018, which defines the upper limit of alcohol in an alcoholic beverage and safety parameters.

The FSSAI ordered that such consignments shall only be scrutinised for safety parameters prescribed in the FSS Act and rules while the standards with respect to the upper limit of alcohol shall not be applicable on the bulk consignments.

The food authority has issued an order in this regard stating, 'It is clarified that such consignments may be scrutinised against sub regulation 1.3.9 of FSS (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018, wherein upper limit of alcohol shall not apply and only safety parameters shall be tested along with other labelling requirement.'

The sub regulation 1.3.9 of the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation says, 'alcoholic beverages shall be packed in suitable containers as specified in the packaging regulations: provided that bulk containers shall have no upper limit for alcohol content and shall meet the safety parameters of the product standards. Such products shall also carry a label declaring, ‘for manufacture of alcoholic beverages only’.'
