Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal has said improved trade relations between India and Pakistan will step up the pace of development and leave a positive impact on the whole South Asian region. Speaking to members of the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) here on Tuesday, he saw great potential for development in Pakistan and called for enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

New Delhi has actively worked with Beijing to address its massive bilateral trade deficit. However, it has another option. India can seek greater economic integration with ASEAN and substitute its imports from China with that of ASEAN. The India-ASEAN Summit on December 20 would be a good place to start. In August 2012, at the ninth meeting of the India-China Joint Group on Economic Relations, Trade, Science and Technology in New Delhi, the main point of concern for India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Anand Sharma, was the widening trade deficit between the two countries – $40 billion for the year ending in March 2012.

The ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI) under the component of Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) of Human Resource Development Scheme emphasises on the processing of agro products into value-added products with a view to reduce the wastage of agricultural produce and increase in the income of farmers.

With India seeking to address the “brutal trade imbalance” with Bangladesh , a World Bank report released on Monday said a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries could push bilateral trade by over 100 per cent. “An FTA between the two nations would increase Bangladesh's exports to India by 182 per cent and that of India's to Bangladesh by 126 per cent,” World Bank lead economist Sanjay Kathuria said, while releasing a report titled ‘Unlocking Bangladesh-India Trade’ at a CII function here.
