The WA Liberal senator Chris Back has told Federal Parliament Indonesia is preparing to import live cattle from Brazil and India. Senator Back says the Federal Government's decision to temporarily suspend live exports last year has had a lasting and damaging impact on the cattle industry in Northern Australia. He says the Indonesian Government wants to import live cattle from other countries.

Amid growing cases of unfair trade practices, the government today said it has made it mandatory for FMCG companies to pack and sell specific products like biscuits and milk powder in standard sizes only with effect from November 1. Following complaints regarding unfair reduction in the quantity of packaged products from some consumer organisation, the government has amended the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011.

Aiming to boost exports of agricultural commodities from the state, the Gujarat government has started installation of a food irradiation unit at Bavla, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The unit is being set up at a cost of Rs 10 crores, on government land. It is expected to go a long way in helping farmers export produce to other countries. Sources say it would be especially useful to farmers who grow fruit and spices in the state.

Indian wheat futures are expected to rise this week on buying by exporters, after a recent rally in global prices boosted demand for the grain from the South Asian nation. "Exporters are getting good orders from Southeast Asian countries and are buying in good quantity from spot markets," said Manjit Singh, a trader based in the Khanna spot market in Punjab.
