The government will soon announce new steps to boost exports and investors' confidence in the Indian economy, Commerce Secretary S.R. Rao said Tuesday. "The government is taking proactive steps. In the next three-four weeks, I expect significant policy announcements which should encourage our industry, our exports," Rao said at an export summit organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Pakistan's offer of a 50% higher price for Maharashtra tomatoes has lined up an array of trucks along the Attari-Wagah trade route. Apart from Pakistan, tomato consignments are also being dispatched to Mumbai for export to Dubai and the Petrapole-Benapole border checkpoint to meet Bangladesh's orders. On Saturday, over 50 trucks of 16 tonne each from Pimpalgaon in Ahmednagar district and Narayangaon in Pune district began an 80-hour journey to Wagah in Punjab.

Much to the respite of millers and food manufacturers facing wheat crunch, the government is planning to release 60 lakh tonne wheat in the open market this financial year. The government's godowns are overflowing with grains due to a record carry-forward stock of 20 million tonne and further procurement of 38 million tonne. Boost for exporters trying to tap a market shunned by US, EU State-run Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) has begun to provide risk insurance cover to exporters doing business with Iran, though in a small way, thereby facilitating exports to the sanction-hit nation. “We have provided credit cover worth Rs 300 crore to exporters for Iran in last three months.
