Record foodgrains output of 235.88 million tonnes in 2010-11: Sharad Pawar

The country is estimated to have harvested a record 235.88 million tonnes (MT) of foodgrains in the 2010-11 crop year, ending June, helped by all-time high output of wheat and pulses, the government today announced.Economists feel that the higher foodgrain production will help further ease food inflation - which stood at 9.5% for the week that ended on March 19 - in the coming weeks.

Veg gravy train to chug along in May

While Railways’ dedicated freight corridor project has not taken off even over two years after its announcement, India’s first dedicated containerised horticulture train will be shown the green flag in May. The development comes on the heels of the recent onion crisis, which made the Government realise the imperativeness of having such freight.

Azerbaijan plans to export table grapes to Russia
07April 2011
The Azerbaijani Economic Development Ministry's National Fund for Entrepreneurship Support (NFES) funded the planting of a vineyard covering 50 hectares in Gusar, Executive Director Shirzad Abdullayev said today. "The NFES allocated a favorable loan worth $1.1 million manat to Simal Kendli fermer Tesserufati to fund this project worth 1.6 million manat," Abdullayev said.

USDA Announces Tough New Food Safety Rules
07April 2011
Food Safety is one of the most important issues facing agriculture. With food recalls becoming an almost weekly occurrence, USDA is proposing tough new regulations to keep contaminated food out of the food supply. The CDC reports that each year 1 out of every 6 Americans gets sick from food borne illness; 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from such ailments.
