Rice exporters seek Goyal’s intervention on China’s allegation of GMO presence in shipments.
Seeking the Indian government’s intervention in the restoration of registrations of seven affected Indian rice exporters after China suspended them on alleged GMO contamination in some consignments, the Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREACG) has urged Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to take up the matter with the Chinese authorities and facilitate an early joint technical review. Expressing serious concern over the suspension of registrations of seven Indian rice-exporting companies by China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) on alleged detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in certain rice consignments, TREACG said that both the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) have already clarified that commercial cultivation of GM rice is not permitted in India.

India’s pulses imports down a tad during in H1 this year.
India’s pulses imports were a tad lower in the first six months of calendar 2026 at 31.80 lakh tonnes, down 1.46 per cent from 32.27 lakh tonnes a year ago, on a dip in chana (chickpea) and urad (black matpe) imports. However, imports of tur (pigeon peas), masoor (lentils) and yellow peas were up during this period, according to a recent market update by trade body India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), which quoted the DGCIS figures.

Delhi, Nigeria to cooperate in agriculture, food security.
Delhi government minister Kapil Mishra on Monday held a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, and his delegation to explore avenues of cooperation in agricultural development, farmers’ welfare and food security. The meeting, held at the Delhi Secretariat, included presentations by the Delhi government’s Development Department and the Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board (DAMB) on the city’s agricultural schemes, farmers’ welfare initiatives and the functioning of the mandi system. The DAMB presented an overview of the supply and marketing chain for grains, vegetables, fruits and flowers, including the process through which agricultural produce reaches markets and the role played by mandis in managing agricultural trade. Mishra said there was 'immense potential' for cooperation between India and Nigeria in agriculture and food security.

50,000 MT cold storage capacity proposed to boost J&K’s horticulture: Minister Dar.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has planned an expansion of cold storage, agricultural technology and horticulture infrastructure across the Union Territory, with an additional 50,000 metric tonnes of cold storage capacity proposed to support farmers and strengthen post-harvest management. Speaking after hoisting the national flag at Baramulla on Independence Day, Minister Javed Ahmad Dar, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the additional capacity would take the overall cold storage capacity in Jammu and Kashmir to around 3.5 lakh metric tonnes.

The 97th Annual General Meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Society was held today at the National Agricultural Science Complex (NASC), New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development. Addressing the gathering, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, 'Without developed agriculture, the dream of a developed India cannot be realised.' He emphasised that India must move beyond merely increasing production and build a strong identity 'from farm to global market'. He called for a demand-driven research ecosystem aligned with farmers’ needs, market demand and consumer requirements, with research outcomes delivering direct and measurable benefits to farmers.
