Indian industry has urged the US Trade Representative (USTR) to reconsider its proposal to impose additional tariffs on most Indian goods under Section 301 of the US Trade Act, arguing that there is no credible evidence linking Indian production to forced labour and warning that punitive duties would disrupt resilient India-US supply chains. In separate submissions to the USTR as part of the ongoing public hearing on the probe (July 7-9), industry bodies said the existing India-US Trade Policy Forum should be used to address concerns instead of imposing tariffs.

India is expected to play a limited role in the global sugar export market over the next two to three years as lower domestic sugar availability, concerns over the impact of El Niño on sugarcane production and rising ethanol demand reduce exportable supplies, putting pressure on global sugar availability. According to the report, India, once the world’s second-largest sugar exporter, is unlikely to regain its position in the international market in the near term. Annual sugar exports, which previously averaged around 6.8 million tonnes, have declined sharply to about 800,000 tonnes as domestic surplus has reduced, Jagran reported.
