ICRISAT Introduces ‘Rapid-Ragi’ Speed Breeding Protocol to Accelerate Finger Millet Research.
International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has introduced the world’s first speed breeding protocol for finger millet, a breakthrough that could significantly enhance crop research and food security across Asia and Africa. Named ‘Rapid-Ragi’, the protocol reduces the crop’s typical growing cycle from 100–135 days to just 68–85 days, enabling up to five generations per year, far exceeding the traditional one or two cycles achieved in open fields.

Egypt imports 4.9 M tons of wheat, 4.2 M tons of yellow corn amid regional instability.
The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed the continued smooth flow of strategic commodity imports into the country, despite ongoing regional tensions. Between January 2025 and today, Egypt has successfully imported approximately 4.9 million tons of wheat, 4.2 million tons of yellow corn, and 2.2 million tons of soybeans, according to official data.

Centre approves potato research centre in Agra with Rs 111.5 cr assistance.
The Union government on Wednesday approved a proposal to set up the South Asia regional research centre of the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Agra entailing financial support of Rs 111.5 crore. The decision was taken at the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

India triples banana output with tissue culture.
Over the past two decades, India has experienced a threefold increase in banana production, driven by state agricultural strategies and widespread adoption of tissue culture technology by farmers. According to the state agriculture department, banana output rose from 545,000 metric tons in 2004–05 to 1,968,000 metric tons in 2022–23, representing a 261% increase.

Philippines plans onion imports to meet year-end gap.
The Philippines Department of Agriculture (DA) is evaluating onion importation to stabilize prices amid projections of insufficient supply lasting until December. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. confirmed intentions to import both red and yellow onions to supplement local supplies to fulfill the national demand. However, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has yet to specify the import volume required.

Centre approves procurement of 2.5 lakh tonnes of mangoes from Karnataka
The central government has approved the procurement of mangoes from Karnataka. This is under the Market Intervention Scheme for 2025-26. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy requested this due to surplus production and falling prices. The procurement price is set at ₹1,616 per quintal. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan responded to Kumaraswamy's concerns about low mango prices.
