Would like to conclude early tranche of trade pact with US before July 9: Commerce Secretary. Negotiations for the proposed India-US trade agreement are in good progress and the two sides are expected to agree on an early tranche of the pact before July 9, a top government official said on Monday. Issuance of preferential certificates under FTAs rises, signals higher trade pact use by exporters. The number of preferential certificates of origin issued under free trade agreements implemented so far has recorded a healthy increase, rising to 7,20,996 in 2024-25 from 6,84,724 in 2023-24, indicating greater utilisation of trade pacts by Indian exporters, according to government data. India's exports to US up 16.9c pc, imports dip 5.76 pc in May. India's merchandise exports to the US rose by 16.93 per cent to USD 8.83 billion in May, while imports dipped by 5.76 per cent to USD 3.62 billion during the month, according to the commerce ministry data. During April-May, the country's exports to the US increased by 21.78 per cent to USD 17.25 billion, while imports rose by 25.8 per cent to USD 8.87 billion, the data showed. India, European Union committed to free trade agreement by year-end: PM in Cyprus. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday began his five-day, three-nation visit with a stop in Cyprus, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the island nation in over two decades. He was received at the airport by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. The key highlight of the visit was his address at the India-Cyprus CEO Forum in Limassol, where he pitched India as a hub of digital innovation, infrastructure development and economic opportunity. GI tag sought for Kollimalai Coffee and Jackfruit. The Patent Information Centre of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai has filed applications seeking Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kollimalai Coffee and Kollimalai Palappazham. TNSCST is an autonomous organization under the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. 'We have instituted IPR cells at 40 educational institutions across Tamil Nadu. And each of them have been allocated a product which has a potential to earn a GI tag. These institutions do the research work,' S.Vincent, Member Secretary of TNSCST told The Hindu. Maize area up in early sowing in Karnataka. Farmers in Karnataka are seen showing preference to plant crops such as maize and soyabean in the ongoing kharif 2025 cropping season, based on the early sowing data released by the State Agriculture Department. Till June 13, the kharif sowing is complete in about 20.42 lakh ha, about a fourth of the targeted area of 82.50 lakh ha for the season. The cumulative exports (merchandise & services) during April-May 2025 is estimated at US$ 142.43 Billion, as compared to US$ 134.69 Billion in April-May 2024, an estimated growth of 5.75%. India’s total exports (Merchandise and Services combined) for May 2025* is estimated at US$ 71.12 Billion, registering a positive growth of 2.77 percent vis-à-vis May 2024.
