India-Israel FTA talks: Strategic sectors must take centre stage over merchandise trade, says GTRI India and Israel have revived negotiations for a long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA), nearly a decade after the last formal talks stalled, with experts saying the emphasis should be on strategic collaboration rather than merchandise trade.The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) on Monday said that India–Israel trade remains modest, and the renewed push should focus on areas such as defence manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, water and irrigation technology, precision agriculture, cybersecurity, and frontier R&D.“For both countries, therefore, the value of the renewed FTA effort lies less in merchandise trade and more in strategic cooperation -- in defence manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, water and irrigation technology, precision agriculture, cybersecurity, and frontier R&D,” GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. West Bengal’s potato cultivation area unlikely to increase this year The total area under potato cultivation in West Bengal is not likely to increase this year compared to last year, as acreage may shrink in some of the major potato growing regions of the State. In Bengal, the country’s second-largest producer of the spud, land under potato cultivation was around 4.9 lakh hectares in 2024-25. Govt working to strengthen farmers’ economy: Horticulture Minister During the visit, the minister issued strict directions to officials of the Horticulture and Jal Shakti Departments to ensure effective on-ground implementation of the project. Under the cluster in Khurahal, approximately 11 hectares have been earmarked for the cultivation of persimmon (Japanese fruit).At present, in the Sundernagar block, around 83 hectares of land across six clusters is under cultivation of guava, litchi, plum and sweet orange.
