GST on FP industry should be minimal: Rawat
18April 2011
Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the food processing industry should be at minimum level to ensure its future growth, said Harish Rawat, minister of state for agriculture and food processing industries, Government of India, at a conference on Food Processing in India: Opportunities and Challenges, organised by the PHD Chamber, in New Delhi on Friday.

USDA proposes new rules for testing meat
18April 2011
The USDA wants new rules for when this little pig—and chicken and cow—can go to market. They would require that when the agency tests meat, processors hold onto the products until results come back clean. But you need to stay vigilant, since a lot of meat still goes untested and some potentially dangerous pathogens—including campylobacter and salmonella—are allowed in raw poultry.

Domestic wine industry grows 300%
18April 2011
India's domestic wine industry expanded nearly 300 per cent in the last decade to an estimated 13.5 million litres annually, according to a report by the US Department of Agriculture. According to the report, India has an estimated 60 functional wineries, with 30 more companies having registered to become wine producers in 2010 in contrast to only six wineries in 2000.

S Korea, China, Taiwan Banning Food Imports From Japan

With no end in sight to the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japan's neighbors are increasingly stepping up efforts to curb food imports, both fresh and processed, from parts of Japan.South Korea has temporarily banned vegetables from Fukushima and four other prefectures. In addition, the Seoul government on Thursday announced a new measure that calls for government-issued documents for all food products -- mostly processed foods -- from Tokyo, Miyagi and six other prefectures certifying safe levels of radioactive iodine and cesium.
