The Trump administration’s tariffs may have reduced China’s exports to the US by 15 per cent this year, but the global chaos caused by the abandonment of international rules has had a bigger adverse impact than the direct hit from the tariffs. According to Bai Chong-En, Dean of School of Economics and Management at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, people should instead come together to improve international rules instead of acting unilaterally and imposing their rule on others.

Global wheat prices are poised to rule bearish, with forecasts pegging the production at a record high of over 815 million tonnes (mt), with estimates of a higher crop in the US, Australia, European Union, Canada, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, analysts say. This comes at a time when Indian growers are set to plant the main rabi cereal, wheat, from this month.

The next round of negotiations between India and two South American countries, Chile and Peru, will be held in October and November, respectively, an official said. The five-day talks with Chile will start on October 27 in Santiago, the three-day deliberations with Peru will begin on November 3 in Lima, the official said.

India will likely not accept any proposal from the European Union to decouple the issue of the protected Geographical Indication (GI) tag for basmati rice from the purview of the Indo-EU free trade agreement (FTA), say analysts. 'Recent reports highlighting concerns over recognising Pakistan’s application for GI tag to basmati rice are likely to complicate the FTA talks. The EU may adopt procedural or diplomatic bridges to avoid the dispute being a dealbreaker and hence look at decoupling it,' said S Chandrasekaran, a historian on basmati GI.

Trade negotiators from India and the 10-nation ASEAN bloc will meet in Jakarta from Monday to push forward the review of their goods trade pact, an official said. The official said that the work on the review of the Asean-India Trade in Goods Agreement has progressed well, but it is still some distance from conclusion for any announcement at the 22nd Asean-India Summit on October 27 in Kuala Lumpur.

India and the four-nation European Free Trade Association (EFTA) will put in place a mechanism to monitor the investments made by the bloc as part of their Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which came into effect on Wednesday, Switzerland's state secretary for economic affairs Helene Budliger Artieda said. This is significant as the EFTA nations have committed to investing $50 billion within 10 years and an additional $50 billion in the five years after that under the trade pact contingent on India's nominal gross domestic product growing to around 9.5% in dollar terms over the next 15 years.
