India and the European Union are hammering out details for their free trade agreement, with plans to conclude negotiations by January, as New Delhi pushes to sign several new FTAs worldwide. The EU talks have been going steadily. Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed in February signing the trade deal by the end of 2025. Still, Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič recently admitted it won’t happen this year. He told POLITICO that it will most likely occur in the first months of 2026. Šefčovič travelled to India last week, and Goyal is expected in January to keep negotiations going.

In the Southern region, the scheme has been actively implemented in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana. To date, significant funds have been released and substantial areas brought under organic cultivation in these states. Tamil Nadu has received Rs 62.36 crore covering 32,940 hectares, while Karnataka has secured Rs 100.49 crore for 49,100 hectares. Kerala has recorded Rs 67.33 crore for 94,480 hectares, and Telangana has received Rs 35.77 crore covering 8,100 hectares under the program. These allocations reflect the government’s continued focus on expanding organic agriculture in key agricultural states.

The Board reviewed annual action plans submitted by states and agricultural research institutions, and approved budgets for key components of the programme, which targets research and development, quality seed production, value addition, market linkages, branding, and export promotion. Emphasis was placed on strengthening infrastructure for essential post-harvest operations such as grading, drying, popping and packaging, as well as adopting contemporary cultivation practices across both traditional and emerging makhana regions.

The scheme components have been designed in a way to address these challenges faced by micro food processing enterprises. Being a demand driven scheme, the biggest implementation challenge is to generate adequate number of complete applications by prospective entrepreneurs and their sanction by implementing Banks. Model Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for food processing projects have been prepared in consultation with National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEMs) and are placed on the scheme portal for easy access by all. District Resource Persons (DRPs) have been appointed in sufficient numbers in districts by State implementing Departments / Agencies to guide and handhold the applicants through the application process, which is entirely online and seamless. A total of 12 nationalized, 20 private and 165 other banks are partnering in the implementation of scheme to ensure widest access to public.

One component of PLISFPI scheme focuses on Millet-Based Products (MBP), with an outlay of Rs. 800 crores. The objectives of the PLI Scheme for Millet-Based Products (PLISMBP) are to increase the use of millets in food products and promote their value addition by incentivizing the manufacturing and sale of selected millet-based products in both domestic and export markets. As on date, out of total allocation of Rs. 800 crores for PLISMBP, an amount of Rs.793.27 crore has been approved to incentivise 29 applicants, which includes 8 large and 21 Small & Medium entities.Under PMFME Scheme, Millet based products has been identified as One District One Product (ODOP) in 21 districts in the country. Millet Mahotsav were organised in 30 districts of various States/UTs as a part of International Year of Millet (IYoM 2023) to provide support for micro food processing entrepreneurs, particularly those engaged in the processing of millet products. It aimed to foster start-ups, entrepreneurs and boost the micro sector of the food industry.

In his monthly letter to the members of the association on Thursday, he said SEA released the First and Second Mustard Crop Monitoring Reports for Rabi 2025-26 prepared by Agriwatch. “As on November 30, all-India mustard acreage has reached about 77.06 lh, around 6 per cent higher than last year, with notable expansion in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and West Bengal. Crop conditions are largely normal, supported by favourable weather and soil moisture. While localised stress was observed due to uneven October rainfall, overall crop health remains satisfactory. Subject to normal weather, the outlook remains positive,” he said.

In a reply in the Lok Sabha earlier this week, he said the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) are also undertaking research in genome editing in 10 crops, in addition to the ICAR’s initiatives. Asked about the present status of product development through the application of genome-editing in various crops in the country, he said two genome-edited varieties of rice have been developed by ICAR. Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council - National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi, has developed low glucosinolate genome edited line in mustard. This is being evaluated under ICAR - All India Coordinated Research Project trials, he said.

The pact would help Indian exporters, reeling under the impact of 50% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Indian goods, to diversify shipments in West Asia region, a gateway to Africa and Europe. Oman has offered to ease norms for Indian companies operating in the Gulf country under the CEPA allowing them to employ up to 50% of their total staff from their India office.
