The certification, issued in June, recognises the unique qualities of these giant fruits cultivated primarily in the wild and natural tracts of the Bhutbandhani area within the Chhapara block of Seoni.

Sharing his experience in a post on X, Chouhan noted that before the main paddy transplantation, dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) was grown in the field and later incorporated into the soil to enhance fertility and act as green manure.

Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal said India will not sign the proposed bilateral trade agreement with the US until a framework guaranteeing a comparative tariff advantage for Indian exports is finalised. India and the US have reviewed progress on the interim trade pact, covering market access, digital trade and supply chains. Both countries are working to conclude an agreement before the July 24 deadline for the expiry of Washington's temporary 10 per cent tariff regime.

Indian and Afghan traders are expected to meet next month to work out modalities for expanding direct trade in Basmati rice, following preliminary discussions between officials of the two countries held last week under the facilitation of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The initiative comes at a time when Afghanistan is looking to diversify its sourcing of Basmati rice. The country consumes nearly 0.5 million tonnes of Basmati annually and has traditionally relied on supplies from Pakistan, aided by the advantage of a shared land border.

At their behest, the Centre has initiated a review of India’s approved basmati varieties, seeking to prune the list of export-eligible aromatic rice strains and preserve the brand identity of popular varieties such as Pusa Basmati 1121. At present, the government recognises 45 aromatic rice varieties as eligible for export as basmati.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever export of biscuits from Varanasi to Oman following the signing of the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), marking a significant milestone for processed food exports from eastern Uttar Pradesh. The inaugural shipment comprises 40 tonnes of biscuits manufactured by Shree Tirupati Balajee Industries, a Varanasi-based exporter. The consignment is expected to strengthen the region’s presence in international markets and boost exports of value-added food products.
