Raise maize productivity without GM technology, Shivraj Chouhan tells scientists.
Indian Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday pledged to ensure maize farmers receive a fair price for their produce. Emphasising the critical need for crop diversification in Punjab and Haryana, he stated that the government aims to expand maize cultivation, targeting a significant increase in production from the current 42.28 million tonnes (mt) to 86 mt by 2047. However, he made it clear that this productivity boost must occur without the use of genetic modification technology.

Himachal: Apple growers welcome Centre's decision to increase Minimum Import Price.
Apple growers across Himachal Pradesh on Saturday welcomed the Centre's recent decision to increase the Minimum Import Price (MIP) for imported apples from Rs.50 per kg to Rs.80 per kg. While the move was seen as a positive step to safeguard domestic apple farmers from cheaper imports, especially from Iran and Turkey, concerns were raised about the effectiveness of its implementation on the ground. However, several farmer leaders warned that mere announcements without strict enforcement could render the move ineffective.

PM Modi meets Argentina President Javier Milei with focus on trade ties.
India and Argentina agreed on Saturday to enhance collaboration in trade, defence, technology, space and pharmaceuticals as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Javier Milei met in Buenos Aires to review bilateral ties. Modi, the first Indian premier to make a bilateral visit to Argentina in 57 years, was given a ceremonial welcome before holding talks with Milei that extended to informal discussions over lunch. Argentina was the third destination in Modi’s five-nation tour that will also take him to Brazil and Namibia.

India is actively negotiating bilateral investment treaties (BITs) with over a dozen countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Israel, Oman, European Union, Switzerland, Russia, and Australia, a government official said. Besides these nations, talks are underway with Tajikistan, Cambodia, Uruguay, Maldives, Switzerland, and Kuwait.

Trade deal may double India goods exports to US, report says.
A comprehensive trade deal between New Delhi and Washington could significantly boost the South Asian nation’s exports and manufacturing sector, paving the way for sustained growth, according to Bloomberg Economics. A broad agreement could nearly double India’s exports of goods to the US — its largest market overseas accounting for 19.3% of total exports — within a decade, and increase gross domestic product by 0.6%, economists Abhishek Gupta and Eleonora Mavroeidi wrote in a report Friday. Including services, overall exports to the US should rise 64%, the report said.
