India may produce record over 86 mn tonnes of wheat: Sharad Pawar

Wheat production is expected to cross 86 million tonnes to set a new record in the ongoing 2011-12 crop year, boosted by a good monsoon and a likely rise in support prices, Agriculture Minister Sharad pawar said today. Wheat production in India, the world's second-largest producer, stood at a record 85.93 million tonnes in the 2010-11 crop year (July-June). India joins ivy club of wine producers

Punjab government sets wheat production target at 19.2 million tons

The Punjab government has set wheat production target at 19.2 million tons on a sowing area of 16.8 million acres during Rabi season 2011-12. The provincial agriculture department has advised the wheat growers to complete sowing of their crop by November 15 and use seeds 50 kg per acre besides applying anti-fungus poison to the seeds before sowing. The department has also directed all its officers and staff to play their role in create awareness among the growers about the benefits of use of latest agricultural technologies. Rice procurement starts on a slow note as crop arrives late

Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state-level agencies have kicked off this year's rice procurement season on a slow note, with 1.4 million tonne picked up since October 1, which is 6% below the figure for the previous year's corresponding period. An food ministry official attributed the weakness to delayed kharif harvests, due to unseasonal rains and flooding in some rice-growing regions.
