Ministers approve draft of India's food security bill

Keen to introduce the food security bill in Parliament during the upcoming monsoon session, an empowered group of ministers (EGoM) headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday approved a draft version of the bill. Govt allows export of 50,000 tonnes of foodgrains to Oman

India today allowed the export of 50,000 tonnes of wheat and non-basmati rice to Oman on diplomatic grounds. "We have cleared export of 40,000 tonnes of wheat and 10,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice to Oman through a diplomatic channel," Food Minister K V Thomas told PTI here. Global demand lifts basmati exports by 27% despite Iran payment issues

India's April-June basmati rice exports have grown from 5.5 lakh tonnes last fiscal to 7 lakh tonnes this fiscal, an increase of 27.3%, according to data from the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda).
