Govt to tighten screws on FDI in seed sector

The government is considering a move to end the automatic approval regime for foreign direct investment (FDI) in seed development, animal husbandry, pisciculture and aquaculture in controlled conditions.The step has been triggered by concerns over the quality of genetically modified (GM) and hybrid seeds present in the food chain.

3 labs to test Japanese food items
22March 2011
India has now put in place three laboratories that will exclusively test food samples coming into the country from Japan for radioactive contamination. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has informed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that it has granted accreditation to three labs — BRIT in the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

Turkish consumers to encounter new fruits
22March 2011
The Turkish Agriculture Ministry has authorized the one-time registration of fruits and vines that are not under protection in Turkey.According to data provided by the ministry, some 89 types of foreign fruits and grapevines will be registered within a few months.

Grains, beans jump on hope for global demand
22March 2011
Wheat prices rose 7.3 percent Thursday, corn rose nearly 5 percent and soybeans rose nearly 4 percent. They joined a broad rally in commodity prices just days after Japan's crisis sent most contracts reeling over fears about long-term demand.
