Food Minister rules out wheat exports
26April 2011
Even as the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, has called for lifting of the ban on wheat exports, his counterpart in the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry, Mr K.V. Thomas, has cautioned against any such move at this point of time. “We (in the Food Ministry) are against wheat exports. Our concern is that if we open exports, it will affect domestic prices,” Mr Thomas told presspersons here on Monday.

Export fund lies under-utilised - exploit the scheme, APEDA official tells entrepreneurs

The targeted beneficiaries of the export development fund for the Northeast do not seem to have fully realised its potential. Though the scheme was made operational in 2000, less than 90 projects have been sanctioned but officials said there was room for plenty more. A sum of Rs 46 crore was sanctioned for the scheme. “The Centre has taken this step to help create employment opportunities in the region.

China, South Korea keep Japanese food import restrictions
26April 2011
Beijing and Seoul have kept restrictions on the importation of food from Japan a trilateral trade deal brokered on sunday Japanese Trade Minister Banri Kaieda asked its two Asian neighbors to ease the restrictions on food imports from Japan, put in place after the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility.
