India beats Japan to become world's 4th largest economy.
India has overtaken Japan to emerge as the world's fourth-largest economy, and is poised to surpass Germany to become the third-largest by 2030, according to an official release. The US remains the world's largest economy, followed by China.

US, EU among crucial trade deals likely to be finalised in next year.
India will pursue about a dozen bilateral trade negotiations in 2026, including free trade agreements with economic powerhouses representing over $50 trillion in combined GDP, as New Delhi intensifies efforts to diversify trade partnerships amid growing global protectionism. After concluding three free trade agreements (FTAs) in 2025, India’s priority negotiations next year include deals with the European Union (EU), the US and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to the commerce and industry ministry’s year-end review.

PM Modi meets economists, sector experts ahead of Union Budget 2026-27, calls for mission-mode reforms across sectors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met eminent economists and sectoral experts to seek their views on the upcoming Budget. During the key budget meet, he called for mission-mode reforms across diverse sectors. The meeting began at 11 AM in the presence of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, other members of the Aayog, economists and sectoral experts.

Nepal, India Agree To Expand Cooperation In Agriculture Sector.
Nepal and India have agreed to formulate and implement a biennial action plan within the next three months to translate bilateral agreements on agricultural cooperation into tangible outcomes, Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development said on Monday. The decision was taken during the ninth meeting of the Nepal–India Joint Agriculture Working Group, held in Kathmandu on Sunday and Monday. The two sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation between agricultural universities and research institutions in both countries, including the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), through separate, time-bound action plans, the ministry said in a statement.

Sowing of India’s rabi crops almost complete.
The total area under all rabi crops as of December 26 increased to 614.30 lakh hectares (lh) against 607.43 lh a year ago, according to the latest weekly update released by the Agriculture Ministry on Monday, with about 33 lh covered in the past week, the current coverage is over 96 per cent of the season’s normal area (last five years’ average) of 637.81lh. The rabi acreage, which was 1.4 per cent higher as of December 19, has shrunk its lead further over the year ago period to 1.1 per cent. The production last year was a record high in many winter crops, including wheat. This year, too, may witness similar level of harvests due to conducive weather conditions, so far.

Australia to remove tariffs on 100% of Indian exports from January 1, says Piyush Goyal.
Australia will provide duty-free access to all Indian exports from January 1, 2026 under the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) between the two countries, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday (December 29, 2025). The Minister was commenting on the third anniversary of the deal, which came into effect on December 29, 2022.

India says its economy has overtaken Japan, eyes Germany.
India has overtaken Japan as the world's fourth-biggest economy — and officials hope to pass Germany within three years, the government's end-of-year economic review calculates. Official confirmation, however, depends on data due in 2026 when final annual gross domestic product figures are released, with the International Monetary Fund suggesting India will cross over Japan next year.

Organic sugar exports up to 50,000 tonnes annually allowed: DGFT.
India on Tuesday eased its export policy for organic sugar, allowing shipments of up to 50,000 tonnes a year. The commodity had been under the 'restricted' category since 2023. In 2023, the government had made it mandatory for traders to obtain a licence to be able to export it. 'Export of organic sugar... is allowed subject to an overall ceiling of 50,000 tonnes per financial year, as per the modalities prescribed by APEDA separately,' the DGFT said in a notification.

Govt approves 50,000 tonnes rice import from India.
A meeting of the advisory council committee on government purchase on Tuesday approved a proposal to purchase 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice from India. Bagadia Brother of India won the supply bid of the rice at Tk 210.5 crore taking part in a competitive bidding by the food ministry.
