Shivraj Singh sets India’s rice target: reduce acreage by 5 million ha, raise production by 10 mt.
India has set a target to reduce acreage under rice by 5 million hectares (mh) and raise the production from the reduced area by 10 million tonnes (mt) to expand the cultivation of oilseeds and pulses, two major areas of concern where the country is struggling to attain self-sufficiency. Addressing an event organised by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi to release the world’s first genome edited rice varieties, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government has started preparing the '-5,+10' plan under which there will be target to reduce area by 5 mh and increase production by 10 mt.

India aims to boost agri-exports amid trade talks with US, EU.
Amid ongoing discussions with the US and Europe on a free trade agreement, Union Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing logistical barriers and expanding market access for Indian agricultural and processed food products. Barthwal was speaking at a ‘chintan shivir’ (contemplation camp) organised by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Commerce Ministry holds industry consultation on India-US trade talks; seeks suggestions.
The commerce ministry on May 2 held a comprehensive consultation with the domestic industry on the proposed India-US trade agreement and sought suggestions to further deepen bilateral trade ties in a mutually beneficial manner, an official said. The stakeholder consultation was chaired by Special Secretary in the ministry Rajesh Agrawal. He is also India's chief negotiator for the India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA).

India's total exports jump to record $825 bn in FY25 as services shipments rise over 13%
India's exports of goods and services hit an all-time high of USD 825 billion in 2024-25, driven by a record surge in the shipments of services that reached USD 386.5 billion in the last fiscal despite global trade headwinds, according to the commerce ministry data. Following the release of March services exports data by the RBI, the country's overall exports for 2024-25 have been revised to USD 824.9 billion from the earlier estimate of USD 820.93 billion, announced on April 15. Total exports were worth USD 778.13 billion in 2023-24.

Brazil secures citrus export deal with India

India buys 25.6 million metric tonnes of wheat from domestic farmers
India has so far purchased 25.6 million metric tonnes of new season wheat from domestic farmers, up from 20.5 million tonnes during the same period last year, India's food secretary said on Thursday. The government is hopeful that it will be able to meet its wheat procurement target of 31.2 million tons, Sanjeev Chopra told a news conference.

Trump says he has 'potential deals' with India, South Korea, Japan
President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he has "potential" trade deals with India, South Korea and Japan as he seeks to convert his tariff policy into trade agreements. At a town hall on the NewsNation television network, Trump was asked when he would be announcing agreements with those three countries. "We have potential deals" with them, he said.

To complete London trade Bridge, Piyush Goyal set to visit UK again soon
Shri Piyush Goyal Ji arrived in the UK on Monday for two days where he met UK secretary of state for trade and business Jonathan Reynolds to advance the FTA negotiations. On Tuesday he met chancellor of exchequer Rachel Reeves. On Wednesday, he was in Norway and on Thursday he is scheduled to be in Brussels to meet the EU leadership. Goyal's return to the UK is expected on Friday or Saturday. An announcement on the signing of the FTA and two other pacts - bilateral investment agreement (BIT) and social security pact (officially dubbed as the Double Contribution Convention Agreement) - could be made then.

Comm Min's export promotion mission may have 12-point plan to push exports, help MSME exporters
The commerce ministry's Export Promotion Mission (EPM) is expected to feature up to 12 components, including easy credit schemes for MSME, e-commerce exporters, facilitation of overseas warehousing, and global branding initiatives, to tap emerging export opportunities and strengthen trade tools for small businesses, an industry official said. India slaps 20% export duty on parboiled, milled rice for food safety
The Ministry of Finance has imposed a 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice and specific milled rice varieties, with the new rule taking effect from May 1. The decision is aimed at regulating rice exports and ensuring domestic food security, according to a Financial Express report. According to the circular issued by the ministry, the export duty applies to parboiled rice—including GI-recognized and other varieties—and “Other Rice” under specific customs classifications. This includes semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed.
