India gains as US tariffs rise: Local firms see export boom. Chief executives of leading homegrown companies including Dixon Technologies, Tata Consumer Products, Blue Star, Havells and Arvind, have told analysts that Indian businesses are at a competitive position in the US tariff scenario and most of them are now flooded with queries for higher business from their US partners. India becomes world's fourth largest economy, overtaking Japan: NITI Aayog CEO. India has become the fourth largest economy in the world, overtaking Japan, NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam said on Saturday. Briefing reporters after the 10th Governing Council meeting of Niti Aayog, Subrahmanyam said overall geopolitical and economic environment is favourable to India. India calls for dismantling of export controls among BRICS members at 15th BRICS Trade Ministers’ Meeting. The 15th BRICS Trade Ministers’ Meeting was held on 21st May 2025 under the Presidency of Brazil, with the theme, 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.' India used the platform to oppose export controls among BRICS members, encouraging mutual support within the bloc. Preparations for ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ in Final Stage under Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Leadership. Under the leadership of Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, preparations for the ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ are now in their final stages. This nationwide campaign will be formally launched on 29th May from the sacred land of Puri, Odisha. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, in collaboration with state governments, are fully engaged in the planning and execution of this massive initiative. India protests US rejection of mango shipments, cites inspection irregularities. Tensions have flared between Indian and US regulatory bodies after the United States rejected 15 mango shipments from India, citing procedural issues during treatment. Indian officials have pushed back, accusing US inspectors of bypassing standard protocols, causing unnecessary rejection of approximately 25 tonnes of premium mangoes. The mangoes, originating from 10 different Indian exporters, were processed at a US-approved irradiation facility in Mumbai under the direct supervision of US inspectors. Piyush Goyal meets EU counterpart for second time in a month on FTA talks. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has met European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic in Brussels, their second meeting within a month, to discuss the proposed free trade agreement (FTA), currently under negotiation between the two regions. Goyal travelled to Brussels on May 23 from Washington, while India's chief negotiator L Satya Srinivas and his team are already at the EU headquarters for the FTA negotiations. BRICS trade ministers' meet: India calls for dismantling export controls among members. India has urged member nations of BRICS group to dismantle export controls within the bloc to boost trade, an official statement said on Friday. Representing India at the 15th BRICS trade ministers' meeting in Brazil, Economic Adviser in Department of Commerce Yashvir Singh emphasised the need to eliminate restrictive trade measures that disrupt critical supply chains. Piyush Goyal meets US commerce secretary for 2nd time in a week to discuss proposed trade pact. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington, their second meeting within a week, to discuss the proposed bilateral trade agreement currently under negotiation between the two countries. On May 20 also, Goyal held a meeting with Lutnick to expedite the talks on the first phase of the trade pact. 'Held a constructive meeting with Secretary @HowardLutnick for a mutually beneficial trade agreement. Committed to enhancing opportunities for our businesses and people,' Goyal said in a post on X. India has scope to grow exports as supply chains are changing. An opportunity to grow exports is knocking on India’s door as supply chains are getting redrawn and steps which raise mid-tech labour-intensive exports can boost the country’s trade interlinkages, mass consumption, investment, and GDP growth, according to an HSBC report released on Thursday. While there is a general sense that India is mostly a domestic demand-driven economy, it is in periods of rising integration with the world that India has grown its fastest, the report states.
