Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has called for a fundamental shift in India’s agricultural research, emphasising that its direction must now be dictated by the needs of farmers. Addressing the annual conference of vice chancellors from state agriculture universities (SAUs) and directors of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes, Chouhan directed ICAR to set and evaluate 3-4 concrete targets annually, stressing accountability and practical outcomes.

Government reviews US rejection of Indian mango shipments.
The government is reviewing and examining the mango shipments that the United States rejected earlier this month, sources said, adding that an error was noted in one of the approved irradiation facility in Mumbai. The Mumbai facility also witnesses the maximum volume of mangoes destined for the US. Attributing the rejection of 12 mango consignments in the US to an error in recording of data related to irradiation treatment on May 8 and 9, sources said that the error and its cause are being examined at a senior level by the facility management.

Gulf pact next after EU trade deal, says Reeves.
The UK wants to strike a trade deal with countries in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar, as its next move, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has told the BBC. She claimed the UK was now in a better place on trade 'than any other country in the world', following major trade deals with India, the US and the EU that were signed this month.

India mulls registration of non-Basmati rice with APEDA before exports.
The government is considering making registration of export contracts mandatory with its agri-export promotion body APEDA for non-Basmati rice before shipments are allowed by the Customs Department. This is on the lines of the current system in place for Basmati rice. The government may charge a fee of Rs.10-20/tonne for the registration. This will be used for promotion of Indian rice abroad.

To create livelihood opportunities for mango growers, a training programme was held at the Office of the Assistant Director of Horticulture at Patnagarh in Balangir of Odisha recently. Indian coffee exports double in value even as production remains flat.
India’s coffee exports have more than doubled from around $800 million in 2014-15 to $1.81 billion in 2024-25, commerce ministry data showed, signalling India’s steady climb in the international coffee market, helped by quality, trade outreach and branding. Interestingly, coffee production in India grew only marginally during the decade—from 344,500 tonnes in fiscal year 2015 (FY15) to a projected 352,000 tonnes in FY25—pointing to massive potential.

India is aiming to regain its market share in China's rapeseed meal imports, taking advantage of the commodity's lower price as compared to the international rate amid global supply constraints, industry body SEA said on Monday. Indian rapeseed meal is trading at $202 per tonne (Ex-Kandla FAS) as compared to international price of $308 per tonne (Ex-Hamburg). This creates a compelling opportunity for Indian exporters.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday said India requires a five per cent annual growth rate in agriculture and allied sectors to become a developed nation by 2047. Chouhan highlighted that foodgrain is grown on 93 per cent of farmland, but the growth is just 1.5 per cent.

Centre to set up 3 new multi-state dairy cooperatives for sustainable growth.
The government has decided to establish three new multi-state cooperative societies, one each for ‘animal feed production, disease control and artificial insemination’, ‘developing cow dung management models’ and ‘circular use of dead cattle remains’. The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and attended by Cooperation Secretary Ashish Bhutani, Animal Husbandry Secretary Alka Upadhyaya among others.
