China continues to import rice at a record pace.
Rice imports by China are expected to set a new record in 2015, surpassing 2014 levels by 200,000 metric tons and marking the fourth consecutive year of record imports. Rice imports surged in 2012 to more than 7 times the average of the previous 5 years, and continued to grow each year thereafter.

PH now more dependent on rice imports, says IBON.
The Philippines has become less self-sufficient in rice, and is instead more dependent on imports, according to research development institute IBON Foundation. Posting on its website an infographic based on 2018 data and the latest figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), IBON presented a comparative analysis of the state of the local rice industry before and after the implementation of Republic Act (RA) 11203 or the Rice Liberalization Law.

Japan's private rice imports hit record high amid inflation.
Japan's private rice imports have already reached a record-high 468 tons in the current fiscal year through March, driven by robust demand from restaurants amid soaring prices for the domestic crop, according to government data. The import volume from April to December last year, the highest since the farm ministry began collecting data in fiscal 2019, was equivalent to about 6.5 million bowls of steamed rice and higher than the 350 to 450 tons annually imported by firms in recent years.
