The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been implementing Central Sector Umbrella Scheme - PMKSY since 2016-17 to create post-harvest infrastructure and processing facilities to boost the overall development of the food processing sector including reduction in post-harvest losses. The component schemes under PMKSY provide credit linked financial assistance (capital subsidy) in the form of grants-in-aid to entrepreneurs for setting up of food processing/preservation infrastructure which, inter-alia, includes cold storages and refrigerated vehicles to minimize post-harvest losses.

Promotion of Food Processing in Rural and Backward Regions.
In order to promote and ensure overall development of Food Processing Industries, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been incentivizing setting up/expansion of related infrastructure through its Central Sector Scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) and Centrally sponsored PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme across the country including rural and backward regions. These schemes are not region or state specific but demand driven.

India, Russia increasing agricultural and food trade.
Agricultural and food trade between India and Russia grew by more than 60 percent in the last year and is expected to increase in the recent period, according to a report. The India correspondent of the news outlet Russia Today (RT) referred to the conversations between the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Patrushev, and the Indian ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, during which the representative of Moscow expressed his interest in continuing to develop mutual trade.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in collaboration with the Embassy of India, Moscow, successfully organized an International Buyer-Seller Meet (IBSM) in Moscow on 10 February 2025. The event aimed to promote the export of bananas, groundnuts, and processed food products from India to the Russian market.

New agriculture policy likely to boost horticulture through contract farming.
Goa’s new agricultural policy, unveiled on Tuesday, is likely to open new avenues for horticulture crop cultivation with the possible introduction of contract farming in the state. According to Chandrahas Desai, the managing director of Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL), the policy could benefit farmers and landlords by introducing legal structures for contract farming.

Gujarat pulses exports double to 2,47,789 tonnes from April to January.
Gujarat recorded a substantial rise in the export of pulses, guar gum, and dairy products from April of last year to January, according to a release. According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) report, pulse exports surged to an impressive 2,47,789 tonnes during this period, doubling last year’s figures. Exporters have also benefitted from the favourable dollar value, contributing to the rise in exports, the release stated. World Pulses Day observed on February 10, promotes pulse cultivation and productivity. As the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses, India has prioritized self-sufficiency in key varieties like tur, urad, and lentils.

Government approves implementation of transportation component of Market Intervention Scheme for Tomato through NCCF.
In view of the falling prices of tomato in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and other major producing states, Government of India has taken decision to implement the transportation component of Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). Under this scheme where there is a difference in the price of TOP crops (tomato, onion and potato) between the producing and consuming States, the operational cost incurred in storage and transportation of crops from the producing State to other consuming States will be reimbursed to Central Nodal Agencies (CNA) like NAFED and NCCF, in the interest of farmers of producing states.
