The government has laid out a procedure for the export of certified organic products, requiring mandatory certification under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) for such shipments, according to a public notice. The Directorate General Of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a public notice said that a product will be allowed to be exported as 'organic product' only when accompanied by a Transaction Certificate (TC) issued by a certification body accredited by the National Accreditation Body for such items under the NPOP of the Department of Commerce.

Chairman APEDA, Abhishek Dev has noted in a speech that India is a global powerhouse holding seventh position in global food export, touching 50 billion USD in exports last year. This year we will be setting new records in terms of export growth. The opportunity is immense as the global market size is 4 trillion USD and we are just 2.4% of it. Processed food as a segment has also great potential and the country aims to increase value added export by 40% in 3 to 4 years. The organic food market is 147 billion USD and we have a very small share of 2.5%. Moving forward, we have to grow 4 times in the next 5 years.

High-ranking government authorities of Nepal and India are preparing to sit for a two-day bilateral trade talk starting Thursday, to revisit the Commerce Treaty between the two countries. According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies (MoICS), the two neighboring countries will be conducting the Nepal-India Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) meeting on January 9-10. The IGC headed by the commerce secretaries from Nepal and India is a bilateral mechanism that oversees the implementation of treaties, trade, transit and investment related issues of both the countries.

Discussions are underway with the Portuguese govt to establish trade routes using Portugal as a gateway to European markets for Indian companies and Goa as a gateway to Indian markets for European manufacturers, said the president of the Portugal-India Business Hub, Altino Alvares. Alvares said that Portuguese companies are willing to establish certification agencies in Goa to ensure Goan products meet European standards, facilitating smoother entry into European markets. A Portuguese olive oil manufacturer already expressed interest in setting up a unit in Goa to distribute and repackage olive oil, said Alvares.

The planned makeover of India's 14-year-old goods trade pact with Asean may take longer than expected as members of New Delhi's fourth largest trading partner press to negotiate tariffs individually, two people aware of the development said.
