India’s decision to place restrictions on Bangladeshi products being exported to North-East India was shaped by several comments made by the interim regime including by Chief Adviser Md Yunus that it can choke the prosperity of NE states by denying them access to the Bay of Bengal. Members associated with the regime gave repeated threats including after Pahalgam attacks that Dhaka could even contemplate to annex the NE states.

India is looking to increase rice exports following an early start to the monsoon season and de-escalation in tensions with Pakistan, raising hopes that the world’s top rice exporter can help stabilise prices in the volatile global market. Monsoon rains arrived on May 13 – about a week earlier than usual – in India’s southernmost territory, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and are expected to be above normal and evenly distributed for a second consecutive year, according to D.S. Pai, a senior scientist at the India Meteorological Department.

After a record imports last fiscal, India’s overseas purchase of pulses are likely to slow down in the current year. In April 2025, the import value of pulses declined by 23.5 per cent on sharp fall in imports of yellow peas and lentils over the corresponding period last year. As per the Commerce Ministry’s quick estimates, the pulses imports in value terms declined to $314.4 million during April, over same period last year’s $411 million.

Aiming to boost agricultural production, the Tripura government on Monday announced the launch in the state of the central government’s ambitious nationwide Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan from May 29. The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is a pan-India campaign announced by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi recently. It will cover 723 districts in the country.

India's total foodgrain production in the financial year 2024-25 increased by over 106 lakh tonnes, reaching 1,663.91 lakh tonnes, up from the previous year's output, said Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday. 'In 2023-24, total foodgrain production was around 15,57.6 lakh tonne. I am glad to tell you that in 2024-25, it has become 16,63.91 lakh tonne,' Chouhan said addressing a press conference in the national capital.

India is aiming to regain its market share in China's rapeseed meal imports, taking advantage of the commodity's lower price as compared to the international rate amid global supply constraints, industry body SEA said on Monday. Indian rapeseed meal is trading at USD 202 per tonne (Ex-Kandla FAS) as compared to international price of USD 308 per tonne (Ex-Hamburg). This creates a compelling opportunity for Indian exporters.
