Amid tariff war, S Jaishankar & Marco Rubio discuss trade pact.
External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Monday talked with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio over the phone and discussed the early conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement in the backdrop of President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs. The two ministers also discussed crises in different regions of the world, including West Asia, Europe and the Caribbean.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri PiyushGoyal, on Monday said that India is well poised to convert the current global situation into an opportunity, just as it did during the Covid-19 pandemic and in the late 1990s when the Indian IT sector leveraged the Y2K bug crisis to mark its emergence on the global stage. Addressing the foundation day of FICCI, in Mumbai, Shri Goyal underscored the need for unity and collaboration among nations and industries to tackle evolving global challenges. 'We are all in it together. All well-meaning countries and businesses must address these challenges collectively and convert them into opportunities,' he said.

US and India discuss tariffs and progress towards 'fair' trade.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a call on Monday to discuss U.S. tariffs on India and how to make progress towards a 'fair and balanced trade relationship,' the State Department said. Jaishankar also said on social media earlier on Monday that he had spoken to Rubio about the early conclusion of a bilateral trade deal.

India's 'applied tariffs' to US only 7-8%, not humongous: Piyush Goyal.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said the 'applied tariffs' to the US are only 7-8 per cent, which he described as not humongous. Declining to disclose details on the ongoing negotiations with the US, which has slapped a 26 per cent 'reciprocal tariff' on the country, Goyal said India believes it can have bilateral trade pacts with countries that exercise fair trade practices.

Agriculture marketing is a State subject. Domestic prices of perishable agricultural produce are mainly influenced by factors such as demand and supply, trade policies, effective taxes and duties. The Central Government takes necessary measures as and when required to balance the demand and supply scenario of agriculture and horticulture produces in the domestic market and ensure remunerative prices to the farmers through appropriate policy measures and market intervention scheme.

Indian Food Importers and ProChile Strengthen Agrifood Trade Ties in Presence of Chilean President.
The Forum of Indian Food Importers (FIFI) and ProChile, the Chilean government agency dedicated to the international promotion of exports, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today, aimed at strengthening the trade of food and beverages between Chile and India. The agreement was signed in the presence of Chile's President Gabriel Boric, who is currently on a State visit to India this week, to enhance commercial ties and cultural exchange with between both nations. The President is accompanied by ministers from various sectors, from mining to agriculture, as well as a business delegation that includes representatives from food export associations and companies.

India to implement new tariff line for rice exports from May 1.
A new tariff line regime for rice-based on process (parboiled, others) and on variety (rice recognised by the Geographical Indication Registry, Basmati, others) will be implemented by the Centre from May 1 for the cereal’s export, Minister of State for Commerce Jitin Prasada told Parliament on Friday. 'This will benefit the more than 20 GI varieties of rice, as defined and recognised by the Geographical Indications Registry under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which are grown in more than 10 States/UTs of India,' he said in a written reply.

India doing better than other countries after US tariffs: NSE CEO.
Asserting that a situation of confusion persists in the world after the recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the US, NSE Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashish Kumar Chauhan on Sunday said India is doing much better than other countries. He said a clear situation is expected to emerge within the next one or two weeks as there will be negotiations and the duty structure will be stabilized.
